IPTV on a MAG Box | Portal & MAC Address Setup

Set up IPTV on a MAG box: why it authenticates by MAC address rather than a password, entering the portal URL, and fixing portal errors.

What you need

  • An active LeafIPTV subscription configured for portal access.
  • The portal URL supplied for your account.
  • Your MAG box's MAC address, printed on the underside of the unit and shown in its system settings.
  • A wired Ethernet connection if the box supports one — most MAG models handle Wi-Fi poorly.

Send us the MAC address first

Nothing else can happen until the address is authorised, so do this before you touch the menus. The MAC is printed on a sticker on the bottom of the box and is also shown under System Settings. It is twelve hexadecimal characters separated by colons, and it must be sent exactly as printed — a transposed character is the single most common reason a MAG setup fails.

Enter the portal URL

MAG boxes use a portal rather than a playlist. The portal address goes into the Servers section of the system settings, and the box loads its entire interface from there once authorised.

  1. Power on the box and press the SETUP or SET button on the remote.
  2. Open System Settings, then Servers, then Portals.
  3. Enter any name you like in the Portal 1 name field.
  4. Enter the portal URL supplied for your account in Portal 1 URL, exactly as given.
  5. Press OK to save, then EXIT, then reboot the box from the main menu.

Wire it rather than using Wi-Fi

MAG hardware is modest and its wireless implementation is the weakest part of it. If the box is anywhere near a router or a network outlet, use Ethernet — it removes the single most common source of complaints about these devices.

If Wi-Fi is unavoidable, put the box on the 5 GHz band and accept that a busy household will occasionally interrupt it.

Troubleshooting

The box shows a portal or authorisation error

Either the MAC address has not been authorised yet, or the portal URL has a typo. Re-read the MAC from the box's own settings screen rather than the sticker, confirm it matches what was submitted, and check the portal URL character by character.

The portal loads but no channels appear

Reboot the box from the menu rather than pulling the power, which forces a clean portal reload. If it persists, the subscription may not be provisioned for portal access — that is a service-side setting, so contact support with the MAC address.

Playback freezes every few minutes on Wi-Fi

This is the classic MAG symptom and it is nearly always wireless. Connect Ethernet and test again before changing anything else.

FAQ

Why does a MAG box need my MAC address?

Because it authenticates by device rather than by login. The service authorises that specific box, which is why the address has to be sent before anything will work and why moving to a new box requires a new authorisation.

Can I use the same subscription on a MAG and a Fire TV Stick?

Portal access and app access are configured differently, so ask support before assuming both will work at once. The simultaneous-connection limit also applies.

What happens if I replace my MAG box?

The new box has a different MAC address and needs to be authorised again. Send the new address to support — the subscription itself does not change.

Are MAG boxes still worth buying?

For a household that wants television to behave like television, with a remote and a channel list and no apps to manage, yes. For anything else, an Android device is more flexible for the same money.

Should I use Wi-Fi or Ethernet?

Ethernet, without hesitation. Wireless performance is the weakest part of these devices and the cause of most complaints about them.
