What a Formuler box is
The Z-series runs Android underneath, with the manufacturer's own launcher and its MYTVOnline player on top. That gives you a device that behaves like a dedicated set-top box out of the box, while still having the Play Store available if you want it.
It is a genuinely different proposition from both alternatives. A MAG box does one thing with no apps at all; a generic Android box does everything and nothing especially well for live television.
The remote is half the product
This is underrated and it is the reason people who like these boxes like them a lot. The remote is designed for live television — channel keys, a guide button, shortcuts that land where you expect — and the stock player is built to match it.
Generic Android remotes are designed for scrolling through apps. If your household includes someone who wants television to behave like television, that difference is worth more than any specification.
Three login types, and picking the wrong one
MYTVOnline accepts a portal URL, an Xtream Codes login, or an M3U playlist. This flexibility is genuinely useful and it is also the single most common source of setup confusion, because entering Xtream details into a portal field produces an error indistinguishable from a wrong password.
Check your delivery email before you start. Username, password and server URL means Xtream. One long playlist URL means M3U. A portal address and a request for your MAC means portal.
Who should not buy one
If you are comfortable with apps and want maximum flexibility, a Shield or a Fire TV Stick will serve you better for less money. If you want a device that also handles general streaming apps well, a Formuler is not the best choice in that category either.
And if what you actually want is a channel list and a remote with nothing to manage, a MAG box does that for less. Formuler occupies the middle, and the middle is only the right answer if you genuinely want both halves.

Underneath, largely yes. What you pay extra for is the stock player and the remote integration, which are meaningfully better tuned for live television than anything generic.
Do I need to send my MAC address?
Only for portal-style access. Xtream Codes and M3U logins authenticate by credentials and need no MAC at all.
