Start with what you already own

If you have a Samsung or LG Smart TV made in the last few years, or an Apple TV, or a games console, you may not need to buy anything. Check whether a compatible player app is available on your existing device before spending money.

The most common unnecessary purchase in this category is hardware bought to solve a problem that was actually the Wi-Fi.

The Fire TV Stick tier

For most households this is the right answer. It is inexpensive, it sideloads player apps easily via the Downloader app, and it handles 1080p and most 4K content without complaint.

Its limitations are real but narrow: limited storage, and the higher-end models handle heavy player apps and large channel lists noticeably better than the base one. If you are choosing, spend the extra on the 4K model rather than on a different category of device.

When an Android box is worth it

Android TV boxes and devices like the Nvidia Shield are worth the money in specific cases: very large channel lists that make cheaper hardware sluggish, heavy use of recording or catch-up, or a preference for player apps that need more processing headroom.

For a household watching a handful of channels on one television, the difference will not justify the price.

• Buy up if: huge channel lists, multiple player apps, heavy catch-up use, or you want the device to last years.
• Buy the stick if: one or two televisions, standard viewing, and you would rather spend the difference on the subscription.

What to avoid

Cheap unbranded Android boxes sold preloaded with apps and channel lists. They are the worst value in this category on every axis: underpowered hardware, no security updates, firmware nobody supports, and the preloading itself is a legal problem you inherit when you buy one.

Buy plain hardware from a manufacturer that will still exist next year, and add the service yourself. It costs about the same and it is not a liability.

MAG boxes are a different thing

MAG boxes are dedicated IPTV set-top boxes activated by MAC address rather than by a username and password. They are simple and stable for people who want a television-like experience with no app management, but they are inflexible — they do one job and cannot run other streaming apps.

If someone in the household is not comfortable with apps, this trade is often worth making.
