The numbers

These are sustained throughput figures, not burst speeds. If your connection delivers these consistently during the hours you watch, you are fine.

  • One HD (1080p) stream — 8 to 12 Mbps sustained.
  • One 4K stream — 25 to 40 Mbps sustained.
  • Two HD streams at once — 20 to 25 Mbps.
  • A busy household, several streams plus general use — 100 Mbps is comfortable.

Why gigabit is usually wasted on streaming

A single 4K stream does not use more capacity because more is available. If two people stream 4K simultaneously on a 1.5 Gbps plan, they use perhaps 80 Mbps between them and the remaining 1.4 Gbps sits idle.

Where higher tiers genuinely help is that they are often provisioned on better infrastructure with more headroom at peak — you are buying consistency rather than raw speed. That distinction is worth understanding before paying for an upgrade that will not change anything.

The number nobody advertises

Jitter — the variation in packet arrival times — matters more for live streaming than bandwidth, and no Canadian ISP advertises it. A connection with 30 Mbps and low jitter streams live sport better than one with 300 Mbps and high jitter.

You cannot buy low jitter directly, but you can favour it: fibre over cable, cable over fixed wireless, and Ethernet over Wi-Fi at every step.

Test the thing you will actually do

A speed test measures a short burst to a nearby server under ideal conditions. It tells you almost nothing about whether a two-hour live event will hold up at 8pm on a Sunday.

The only test that means anything is streaming the content you care about, on the device you will use, during the hours you will watch. That is what a 24-hour trial is for.

Fixed wireless handles a single HD stream in most cases, but struggles with 4K or several concurrent streams, and its jitter is higher than fibre at the same speed. Satellite adds latency that on-demand content tolerates and live sport does not. Both are worth testing carefully before a long commitment.
