When the TV Guide Is Empty, Wrong or Hours Out

EPG problems are the most common IPTV complaint that has nothing to do with streaming. What the guide actually is, why it breaks, and how to fix each failure mode.

The programme guide is a separate download from the channels, which is why it fails on its own. Empty, stale and time-shifted guides each have a different cause and a different fix.

The guide is a separate thing from the channels

This is the fact that makes everything else make sense. Your player downloads the channel list from one place and the programme data — the EPG — from another, often on a different schedule. They can and do fail independently.

So a working channel list with an empty guide is not a contradiction, and it is not evidence that anything is wrong with your subscription. It means one of two downloads succeeded.

Empty guide

Usually the guide has not been fetched yet, or the fetch failed and the player did not tell you. Trigger a manual EPG update from the player's settings rather than restarting the app — a restart often just reloads the same empty cache.

On devices with limited storage, particularly the smaller Chromecast dongles and older Fire TV sticks, an empty guide is frequently a full disk. Guide data is written to storage, and when there is no room the download silently fails. Free a gigabyte and try again.

Guide shifted by a whole number of hours

This one is always a time-zone setting, and it is almost always in the player rather than the feed. EPG data is published with an offset, and the player applies your local zone to it. If either side is wrong, everything shifts by exactly one, two or three hours — a fractional shift is a different problem.

Set the time zone explicitly in the player instead of leaving it on automatic. This bites hardest in Newfoundland, which is on a half-hour offset, in Atlantic Canada, and in Saskatchewan, which does not observe daylight saving and therefore changes its relationship to Eastern twice a year.

Guide is stale or partly filled

Programme data is typically published a few days ahead, so a guide that runs out two days from now is behaving normally. A guide showing yesterday's schedule is a cache that has not refreshed.

Set an automatic refresh interval in the player — daily is sensible — rather than relying on a manual update. Players differ enormously in how well they handle this, and it is one of the main practical reasons people move to a more capable player on Android TV.

Some channels never have data

Guide coverage is not uniform. Smaller and international channels frequently have no programme data published at all, and no amount of refreshing will conjure it. If the main channels you watch have a guide and a handful of minor ones do not, that is normal and not a fault.

Questions

Why does the guide work on my phone but not my TV?

Different players, different EPG handling, and often different amounts of free storage. The phone is usually the one with room to spare. Check free space on the television device first.

Can I use my own EPG source?

Many players accept a custom EPG URL, which is useful if you want better coverage for specific channels. It is an advanced setting and the channel identifiers have to match, so expect some work to get it aligned.
